In the last few years or so, Glutathione has been a buzz word in the beauty industry. From soaps, pills, and injections – various products and companies emerged, each wanting a share of the Filipino market that’s obsessed with skin whitening.
Personally, I do not feel any urgency to jump into the bandwagon. I love the color of my skin – the way that it’s always brown and healthy- looking whatever the weather. I’m thankful that I do not have to go through the fake tanning process that’s the trend in colder regions of the globe. My skin is perfectly dusky all year round. :)
Nevertheless, in the interest of writing a review, I decided to give this Glutathione soap from Flawless Beauty a try. Who knows? Some of you may be interested in skin whitening.
Firstly, though, let’s talk about Glutathione and how it works exactly. We all know it whitens the skin. So many people have told us so but what does it have that brings about this result?
While doing my research, I found out that Glutathione was an antioxidant naturally found in our bodies. Like all antioxidants, it’s an important compound that helps prevent damage to the cells caused by free radicals. As such, it has many uses aside from skin whitening. You can read more about its other uses here.
In the process of skin whitening though, Glutathione works by inhibiting the formation of melanin. As some of you may know, melanin is the pigment that gives color to the skin. Hence, by slowing down the process of melanin reaching the upper layers of your skin, glutathione is able to hinder pigmentation thus causing the skin to lighten.
Because it’s an antioxidant, it can also help slow down the aging process by reducing the signs of aging caused by free radicals. Hence, it can also be used to prevent age spots and wrinkles.
Now on to the product review:
- Unlike the Alpha Arbutin Soap, which I loved so much, I wasn’t as enthusiastic about this soap. For one, it didn’t smell like anything special. It smelled exactly like soap. Some of you may want that but for me, I like scented things especially in my bath.
- After a month of using it, I didn’t see any significant difference to the color of my skin. This was a bit expected though since any whitening on my part will be very minimal since I’m already relatively fair (though not in the Caucasian sort of way). I think that if I really wanted to be whiter, pills or injections would have done a better job. People with darker skin tones though might see a more evident change.
- This bar of soap lasted me a month (even more) so in terms of longevity, you can definitely expect this product to give you your money’s worth. It didn’t disintegrate or melt like some other soap bars sold by other local sellers.
If I had to rate this soap, I’d give it a 3/5 over all. It’s not my favorite but it’s still worth a try.
Having said that, I got a couple more products from Flawless Beauty a few weeks back. This loot, sent over by the very nice and lovely Lei Arsad, included their newest product – the Alpha Arbutin Whitening Hand and Body Lotion. It’s the best partner to go with my favorite Alpha Arbutin soap because it smells oh-so-delicious! If you like vanilla, then the lotion with the soap will definitely be treat! I promise you’ll smell good enough to eat all day long. :)
In addition to that, she also sent me another new product of hers, which is the Nourishing Milk Bar that contains pure goat’s milk. Accordingly, this is made for people with dry, sensitive, and problematic skin. I shall do another review for this in the coming weeks.
To end, I’d like to ask you what you you think about whitening products. Are you a fan or like me, are you more hesitant to use them?
